Plant Pathology Dept. UCR

As part of the University of California Turf Disease Diagnostic Lab services, a weekly report is being sent out to update clients of current disease outbreaks in California and nearby locations with a focus on diseases of golf course turf.  The update will be sent out on a weekly basis.  This update is still a working version, if you have comments about how it can be changed or improved, please e-mail me your suggestions.   If you receive duplicate messages, please let me know.

Outlook and Summary: June 22, 2009

Anthracnose appears to be starting to pop up more frequently in the diagnostic lab. It could signal the start of the anthracnose season already.

For perennial ryegrass, the presence of anthracnose often signals low fertility, heat and drought stress. Here, anthracnose is usually just a secondary pathogen affecting stressed turf. It usually does not warrant control directly, but does often indicate that cultural conditions need improvement in these areas.

On creeping bentgrass, we typically see anthracnose on greens that are Òlean and meanÓ, especially when there is high humidity and overcast days. Again, in these cases, anthracnose is usually not the primary cause of damage but does signal that fertility needs to be increased and plant stress reduced. Typically, shutting anthracnose down with a fungicide application or two followed by increasing the fertility will solve the issue.

On annual bluegrass though, anthracnose is a real killer because its often the disease that puts the nail in the coffin for Poa greens.

as well as cultural management practices for anthracnose management

For inland areas Ð it looks hot and dry; perfect conditions for anthracnose and summer patch. While coastal locations will continue to have conditions ripe for dollar spot, brown ring (Waitea) patch and rapid blight.
